Xi'an: Traveling

Getting to and from Xi'an took 16 hours by train. I caught the evening train out of Yancheng and arrived in Xi'an in the morning. I was able to get a nice (expensive) sleeper cabin, upper bunk, and the most memorable thing that happened was my fellow passengers were snorers. Thank goodness for earplugs.

I climbed up with that handlebar by the top of the door and that step, which is pretty high
considering the light switch is just above it.

My return trip was no where near as agreeable. First of all, by the time I could get a ticket there were only cheap seats left, and I was lucky to even get one of those. And I do mean lucky: I was in the last car, 17, and in the last section of seats--of 118 seats, I was in #114.

All of these people (stretching down to the opposite end of the hall) got on my train, besides those already aboard and those boarding at subsequent stops.

It took so long to walk down to car 17 that by the time we got there, the handlers literally shoved us boarders on because the train had to get going.

I was fortunate in other ways. For example, because we were the end car our disgusting bathroom was only used by half a car of people, and thus stayed slightly less disgusting than bathrooms located between two cars. Also, I was seated facing backward, away from the rest of the passengers, keeping me mostly out of sight, helping me avoid unwanted attention. Well, excepting all the obnoxious men who stared and made jokes about me as they used the back of the car as a smoking area.

The aisles were filled with people forced to make due with "standing" tickets.

On Holiday: Xi'an

Me and my army.

I'm in Xi'an this week, checking out the sights*, wasting time, and wishing my hotel had internet in the rooms and not just the common area.

More soon!

*Or should that be "sites"? Are both correct?

Challenge: Why did I take this photo?

Take a good look at this picture - enlarge it if you need to - and see if you can guess why I took this photo. Answer after the jump.

Gag!

Young Chinese couples have the nauseating habit wearing matching tops. I have yet to catch a great photo of this custom, but here's one I did get that illustrates the idea.

Adventures in Chinglish: Potluck Edition

In February we celebrated Sam's birthday with a potluck.

This thing is mostly "frosting"-product and very little bland white cake.

The assortment of dishes and carriers people brought food in resulted in a few excellent Chinglish specimens.

The back of a plate.

"fetus chrysanthemum tea"

Oh those cheeky rabbits!

Bellfruit are just showy Asian pears

Which isn't to say they aren't good - because bellfruit are good. I would buy one again. But if the choice were between an Asian pear and a bellfruit, I'd just go with whichever is cheaper, because the taste and inner-texture is exactly the same.
(The Wikipedia entry includes this sentence: "This [fruit] is edible, but flavorless." I disagree; mine had a flavor. An Asian pear flavor.)

Here're shots of the inside. You can see how the inner-makeup is similar to an Asian pear.

All Glory to the Internets: Chinese Counterfeiting

An article recently went up on Cracked: The Five Most Insane Examples of Chinese Counterfeiting. I recommend at least checking out #1 Cigarettes - it's pretty interesting, and maybe a little unnerving if you're a smoker.

"Hands" around the world

We had a kite decorating event and a team of children, intending to draw hands holding the world, drew what looks a lot like a pair of something elses holding the world.
